COngratulations to our STARs!

Katerina Creel

Katerina Creel was recently named our STAR student.  Katerina selected Lacey Pinson, her Dance and Drama teacher, as her STAR Teacher. Katerina calls Ms. Pinson her “second mother” because she spends so much time with her preparing for the many productions in which she has performed.  Katerina says that Ms. Pinson leads by example in encouraging her to be a better student and person. She is always happy, non-judgemental, and does what’s best for her students. To be named a STAR student, a senior must have the highest SAT score in the school on one test date through November prior to graduation. The student's SAT scores must be equal to or higher than the national average, and the senior must be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in the senior class based on grade point average.

Lacey Pinson

The STAR teacher is selected by the STAR student for having made the most significant contribution to the student's scholastic development.

Ms. Pinson says, "Katerina is a smart, funny, and very talented young lady whom I have gotten to know through many hours spent in class and in rehearsal. I can't speak highly enough of her hard work, dependability, and contagiously awesome personality!”

Katerina is a gifted student who has participated in the honors program.  She is very active in the drama department and has performed in productions for three years including the spring musical Oklahoma!, and One Act Play competition productions Cinderella, and You Can’t Take it With You.  She has also performed in the county wide productions of Phantom of the Opera and Crazy for You.  Katerina directed, produced, and acted in A Christmas Carol for her Senior Project assignment for the honors seal.

After graduation, Katerina plans to major in biology with an emphasis in pre-medicine.  While she is waiting on scholarship opportunities and competitions before she makes her final decision, her options include Berry College, Samford University, and Furman University. Katerina and Ms. Pinson will be honored at a luncheon on February 21 in the MHS Media Center.

Hunter Hays of Model named scoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week

Hunter Hays, a Model High School senior center on offense and nose guard on defense was named the scoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week by Georgia High School Football Daily this past week.

Hays is a standout student in the classroom as the Model Blue Devil team captain has a 4.0 Grade Point Average and scored a 30 on the ACT college entrance exam.

On the gridiron, Hays is a contributor on both sides of the ball.  On offense, Hays has a 92 percent grade out average for the year at center and has 18 pancake blocks.  Hays has twenty-six tackles and three forced fumbles as the Blue Devils' nose guard on defense.

According to an article in Georgia High School Football Dailey, Model head coach Gordon Powers sees Hays as a leader on and off of the field. "Hunter Hays has a tremendous passion for helping others and a keen sense to spot other students who may be struggling academically, emotionally, and/or socially." Powers said. "I have seen him during lunch sit and talk to students who are by themselves or invite them to sit at his table."
